The Battle of Chang'an was a battle between Lu Bu, who had just killed Dong Zhuo, and the remnants of the latter's forces. After Dong Zhuo's death, Wang Yun declared that Fan Chou, Li Jue, Guo Si, and Zhang Ji were not to be pardoned, invoking a violent reaction from the four.

Ultimately, Lu Bu was defeated and forced to flee while Li Jue and his allies effectively took control of Emperor Xian until the intervention of the White Wave bandits and later Cao Cao.

Role in Games[]

In Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2, the capital of Wei is the final battle in Shu's story. Zhuge Liang successfully reaches Chang'an, and two task areas are taken to break the castle walls. Xiahou Mao and Xiahou Wei ambush the Shu troops in both task areas and must be defeated to secure the tiles. Defeating Cao Pi will end the stage and Shu's story. If both task areas are taken before defeating Sima Yi, the strategist will become recruitable.

In Wei's story, the battle is known as "Capture of the Ma Clan." Cao Cao works to capture Ma Teng before he can escape. The battle ends either if Ma Teng is defeated, leading to the Battle of Chibi, or if both escape point gates are taken, leading to the Battle of Tong Gate.

In Shu's hypothetical route, the Shu forces ambush Xiahou Mao with help from women who were forced to be part of his harem. Jiang Wei arrives, predicting Shu's advance, but is unable to pass through the front gates. Xu Shu and Pang Tong decide to separate to deceive Ma Zun and convince Jiang Wei to defect. If the Shu forces thwart all of the Wu plots at Lukou, Lu Meng and Lu Xun will appear to help defend the bridge.

In the Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends expansion, the stage is reused in Wei's story, where Ma Chao wins at Tong Gate and attacks Chang'an. Jia Xu orders to retake armory to reactivate pyrocannons, but Zhang Lu and Ma Chao's men make it difficult. Jia Xu orders the final charge against Ma Chao, defeating him.

Lu Bu's army rebels against Dong Zhuo, who attempts to kill him at Chang'an after escaping at Hulao Gate. Wang Yun, who is blocked by Zhang Liao, decides to serve Lu Bu instead. Dong Zhuo releases tigers, but Lu Bu's forces manage to tame some.

Li Ru and Cai Yong ambush Lu Bu's men, helping cover Dong Zhuo's escape. Jia Xu appears and orders the activation of pyro cannons. Wang Yun is forced into hiding, and Lu Bu eventually concedes and attempts to escape.

Dong Zhuo's side of the battle is filled with enemy troops, and he must defeat Wang Yun to gain access to the central area. The stage reappears as the final hypothetical battle for Lu Bu's story, with a revamped map revealing Chang'an's outer and inner walls.

Chen Gong orders the taking of the western garrison to make rams, but all three are killed. Lu Bu's forces kill Zhang He and launch a barrage of fire arrows, destroying the inner wall's gates. Guo Si raises the central drawbridge, forcing Lu Bu to take a detour east using the moat. Guo Jia ambushes Lu Bu's forces, and Li Jue orders steps to reduce morale.

Historical Information[]

In 192, Dong Zhuo's troops surrendered after Lu Bu's plot led to his death. Four associates, Fan Chou, Guo Si, Li Jue, and Zhang Ji, requested amnesty but were denied. They decided to attack Chang'an instead, but Wang Yun's counterattacks failed. Lu Bu attempted to stop the siege, but was forced back into the city. Li Jue promised to leave if Wang Yun committed suicide, but he continued the siege. The rebels breached the castle walls, and Li Jue and Guo Si wanted to kill Emperor Xian, but were dissuaded and promoted. Chang'an remained a symbol of the emperor's power until Cao Cao took control.
