Dong Zhuo (onyomi: Tō Taku) started as a minor warlord with formidable martial capabilities who gradually rose to power by subjugating forces west of the imperial capital. He is best known for effectively forcing himself to be the de facto leader of the land by dwindling the Han Dynasty's influence. His tyranny lasted for four years and was cut short when his step-son, Lu Bu, killed him.

His Dynasty Warriors counterpart is fifty-seventh place in Gamecity's Dynasty Warriors 7 character popularity poll and sixty-fifth in the Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends poll. The latest poll for the eighth installment puts him in seventy-sixth. The character poll for overseas fans puts him in tenth place for the Other division.

Dynasty Warriors[]

Dong Zhuo, an imperial general, deposed the Emperor during the Yellow Turban Rebellion and supported a puppet heir. He became Prime Minister and tyrant, leading to a coalition against him. Zhuo's death sparked a decades-long war for China's unification, as private army warlords lost faith in the Han Dynasty. His brief rule lasted for decades.

In Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends, Dong Zhuo defeats the alliance at Hu Lao Gate, scattering their leaders and killing Yuan Shao. He quickly sets out to bring the rest of China under his control, defeating Cao Cao at Guan Du and Sun Ce at He Fei. After putting the lands of Wu under Lu Bu's direct control, Dong Zhuo deposes the Emperor and confronts Liu Bei's large army, intent on restoring the Han Dynasty. He destroys the kingdom of Shu, only to find that his greatest warrior, Lu Bu, and Diao Chan have revolted against him. His fleet engages Lu Bu's army at Chi Bi, and despite the aid to Lu Bu from the remnants of Wu and Shu, Dong Zhuo is victorious over the seemingly indomitable Lu Bu, uniting China under his rule.

His Musou Mode in Dynasty Warriors 4 remains similar to his previous story with a few differences. In this title, he destroys the coalition, Sun Jian, Liu Bei, and Cao Cao. After he reigns supreme over his rivals, Lu Bu revolts with only his most loyal generals.

Dong Zhuo's legend mode in the Xtreme Legends expansion details his encounter with the corrupt Ten Eunuchs. In an effort to try to save the emperor from them, He Jin plans to slay them. However, the eunuchs murder him and try to hide from their crime. Knowing that the eunuchs still remain in the capital, Dong Zhuo orders them to be exterminated at once. Three have already been caught and slain, but Dong Zhuo decides to personally kill the fleeing seven to spark his true ambition. After he slays the final eunuch, he escorts the emperor's carriage back to the capital and declares himself to be the new royal protector.

In Dynasty Warriors 5, Dong Zhuo defends his home in Xi Liang from the influence of the Yellow Turbans. Zhang Jiao dies and, while he is content to remain in his home, he is suddenly attacked by Ma Teng and the forces of Liang. He retaliates by driving them back and slaying Ma Teng. When the eunuchs rebel in the capital, Dong Zhuo saves the child Emperor Xian and places him on the throne. His action upsets the regional lords and they attack him at Si Shui and Hu Lao Gates. Putting an end to all who oppose him, Dong Zhuo's reign of terror continues, and he creates the "paradise" that he has always wanted. However, it is implied that his rule would not last for very long as his one of his mistresses conspires for his downfall.

Dong Zhuo shares his Legend Mode in the Xtreme Legends expansion with Yuan Shao. Both men desire to save the emperor from the eunuch's plot, but both have different desires in the battle. While Yuan Shao wants to save He Jin and liberate the court, Dong Zhuo plots for the simultaneous death of the general and the eunuchs. Using the tragedies as his pedestal, Dong Zhuo desires to gain a higher influence in the Imperial Court. Once the eunuchs are destroyed and the emperor is saved, Dong Zhuo berates the politicians for trying to stand against him. He is pleased to be one step closer to his indulgent paradise.

Dong Zhuo's ending scene in Dynasty Warriors: Online shows him rewarding the player for their hard work. Upon asking whether they want money, status, or both, he decides to make them a part of his grand paradise whether they like it or not.

He continues to be the main antagonist at Hu Lao Gate in the following title. He dies there with his ambitions left unfulfilled, but is spontaneously revived from beyond the grave in Lu Bu's story. He at first teams up with Zhang Jiao to avenge the grudge he feels due to Lu Bu's betrayal, but they eventually join with the leaders of the Three Kingdoms and Yuan Shao to end his former general. He is among the many who is killed by Lu Bu in his ending.

In Dynasty Warriors 7, Dong Zhuo is introduced as Sun Jian's military superior in Liang Province. He commands Sun Ce and his children to obey his commands and kills rebels. After suppressing rebellions, Dong Zhuo claims to be the capital's protector and child emperor. He orders Cao Cao to serve him in Luoyang, but is rejected by the lord and ordered for execution. The narrative emphasizes his atrocious burning and slaughtering of innocent people, and he is eventually killed off screen by Lu Bu.

His first Legendary Battle has Dong Zhuo claim his right for Diao Chan's affections, causing him to antagonize his relations with Lu Bu. He is surrounded at Luoyang by the forces rallied against him in his secondary Legendary Battle. His main goal aside from defeating Yuan Shao and Cao Cao is killing Lu Bu for his treachery.

The Xtreme Legends expansion details Dong Zhuo's escape from Luoyang. The coalition against him has gained ground and are threatening to slay him. Therefore, he orders his men to retreat with the Emperor. Since his retainers are being overwhelmed by the coalition officers, Dong Zhuo has to rescue them in order to achieve victory. Once he meets his destination outside the capital, he scorns his opposition and enjoys his outstanding longevity.

In Dynasty Warriors Next, Dong Zhuo serves as the antagonist of the second chapter. He personally leads the resistance against the coalition at Hulao Gate only to be defeated in a duel by Xiahou Dun. After razing the capital, he makes his way to Chang'an while impeding the pursuing Cao Cao with tigers. He uses every tactic at his disposal to repel the other warlords, even releasing wild animals to scatter their numbers. However, Lu Bu and Diaochan's sudden betrayal forces him into lead a full-out assault out of desperation, leading to his death at the hands of Cao Cao. Players can only control Dong Zhuo in Conquest Mode.

In Dynasty Warriors 8, Dong Zhuo's version of Hulao Gate has him seek out Diaochan who had gone missing on the battlefield. After leaving the capital in flames, he makes his way through the front lines to search for her while clashing with numerous officers of the allied forces. Upon discovering Diaochan and Lu Bu near the enemy camp, the two of them attempt to kill their master only to be subdued in the end. With Lu Bu dead, Dong Zhuo forcefully takes the dancing maiden for himself and makes plans to build a new paradise.

In the Xtreme Legends expansion, Dong Zhuo is given two additional scenarios. In the first, his and Yuan Shao's armies clash at Hulao Gate to determine who shall take control of the Han. In this scenario, Dong Zhuo's army consists of several new officers who canonically opposed him, including Sun Jian, Jia Xu, and Yuan Shu. If Dong Zhuo is able to cut through Yuan Shao's defenses quickly enough, several of Yuan Shao's officers will defect to Dong Zhuo's side. As Dong Zhuo's army closes in on Yuan Shao, they are suddenly ambushed by Ding Yuan and Lu Bu. Unfettered, Dong Zhuo slays them both before slaying Yuan Shao and solidifying his rule over the Han.

In the second scenario, Dong Zhuo, in an attempt to eliminate his rivals, invites them to a tournament to determine the mightiest warrior in the land, but in reality it is a trap to kill all his rivals in one fell swoop. However, after Dong Zhuo wins the tournament, it is revealed that his rivals anticipated the trap and took control of Xuchang and the Emperor while Dong Zhuo was focused on the tournament. Dong Zhuo must "rescue" the Emperor before the coalition can extract him from Xuchang, then defeat his remaining rivals.

In Lu Bu's story, Dong Zhuo first appears in the fight to exterminate the Ten Eunuchs at Luoyang. After the last eunuchs is killed he offers Lu Bu the chance to serve him which is quickly accepted. When Yuan Shao, Cao Cao and other disgruntled warlords band together to face Dong Zhuo at Hulao Gate, the tyrant decides to flee with the emperor as Lu Bu and Zhang Liao cover his retreat. After the coalition disbanded, Dong Zhuo hoped to use Chang'an as his paradise until Diaochan convinces Lu Bu to turns on him and ultimately kill him as Dong Zhuo tries in vain to escape.

In Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed, Dong Zhuo serves as the main boss for the Luoyang campaign which has the player chase after him throughout the whole area. During Wei's first scenario, his attempts to lure Cao Cao back with a letter fails, enraging him enough to set Luoyang on fire while abducting Emperor Xian.

Dong Zhuo's bond story details his rise to power and utter downfall. As the only surviving unit within Zhang Wen's forces, Dong Zhuo becomes emboldened enough to seize control of the imperial court. His many atrocities lead him to die at the hands of a manipulated Lu Bu and his corpse is publicly desecrated. For all his cruelty, his final story scene shows that he had once been a strict but diligent man who gradually gave in to his own vices.

The ninth installment first sees Dong Zhuo when he is told of how Liang Province is being annoyed by Han Sui and the local brigand tribes. Encouraged by his granddaughter Dong Bai, he sets out to deal with Han Sui, having Sun Jian of Changsha assist him. Afterwards, he receives word that Duan Gui, one of the Ten Eunuchs, wishes to speak with him. Seeing this as a chance to get in deep with the Imperial Court, Dong offers Duan a bribe in exchange for a repayment in the future. When the suppression of the Yellow Turbans begins, his forces are stalled by Zhang Bao's sorcery.

In Wu and Wei's story, Dong Zhuo will be forced to mobilize when Cao Cao and Sun Jian lure Yellow Turbans directly to him. In Shu's story, he claims to have only feigned difficulty to get more reinforcements from Luoyang, but his plan is foiled when Liu Bei's forces defeat Zhang Bao without help.

After Zhang Jiao is eliminated, Dong seizes power in Luoyang and soon begins his reign of terror. One day, he is confronted by Ding Yuan, but Dong Zhuo is more impressed by Lu Bu's display of power. He is able to convince the warrior into siding with him, with the first order of business being to have Lu Bu slay his adoptive father Ding Yuan. After securing Lu Bu's services, Dong Zhuo returns to Luoyang, but Cao Cao attempts to assassinate Dong in the Imperial Palace. Though Lu Bu stops the attempt, Cao Cao is able to flee since Lu Bu refused to give chase to fleeing prey.

Cao Cao would soon persuade Yuan Shao to form the Allied Forces to overthrow Dong. Though he is able to triumph against the warlords that gathered to stop him, Dong Zhuo decides to abandon Luoyang and flee to Chang'an with Emperor Xian, setting Luoyang ablaze to further stall the Allied Forces, not wanting the hassle of fighting them further if they attack Luoyang again. The final obstacle to Chang'an would be none other than Cao Cao's army, having gone ahead of their allies to stop Dong Zhuo.

Having defeated Cao Cao, Dong Zhuo can finally relax after solidifying his victory against the Allied Forces. Now free from his pursuers, Dong Zhuo takes a seat atop the Imperial throne and gleefully ponders if he can soon have a child to inherit his power, confident that he is unstoppable with Lu Bu behind him.

After his story, he is betrayed by Lu Bu, but Dong Zhuo quickly realizes that the general had been instigated by Diaochan. Enraged by the treachery, Dong Zhuo attempts to defend himself but is quartered before he can raise his blade.

Warriors Orochi[]

In Warriors Orochi, Dong Zhuo willingly serves under Orochi and is the first person to be scouted by Da Ji. Dong Zhuo only agrees to fight the Serpent King since he promises wealth and treasure for him. In both games, he is loyal to Orochi. A Gaiden stage in the first title has Hideyoshi interrupt his gold shipment, which angers Dong Zhuo and makes him lose faith in Orochi. The tyrant forsakes his servitude if he doesn't receive any gold and decides to join Nobunaga.

After the events of the first title, Dong Zhuo goes back to his pillaging ways for his ideal paradise in the sequel. He attacks villagers and Zhang Jiao's followers in Lou Sang Village, and is driven away by Sakon and Fu Xi. He is also seen supporting Da Ji and doing other acts of villainy throughout the game. When Orochi is resurrected, Dong Zhuo continues to serve his master.

He shares his dream stage with Kunoichi and Magoichi. He hires the two mercenaries to act as his bodyguards to protect his stolen treasure through Hasedō. He claims to have gotten the loot fair-and-square, but he actually stole it from Yuan Shao. When his treasure is transported, the local villagers mistakenly thank Dong Zhuo's treasure as a kind donation for their home. Dong Zhuo denies the claim but has his treasure given to them.

Dong Zhuo continues his allegiance to the serpent army in Warriors Orochi 3 with hopes of one day creating his paradise. He holds several maidens hostage for himself at Xuchang, and uses them as hostages to force other generals such as Nagamasa Azai, Liu Shan, Kiyomasa Katō, and Katsuie Shibata to help the demons. When the Coalition returns to Da Ji's past, he is found near Chengdu. Having just realized that he can do whatever he wants, he starts his conquest by terrorizing the nearby peasantry. Upon his defeat by the future Coalition, Zhuge Liang orders him to be their prisoner to prevent his allegiance to the serpent forces. Left with no other options, Dong Zhuo then begrudgingly fights for the Coalition.

Dong Zhuo appears as an antagonist in most of the downloadable stages. In "In Vino Veritas", he is one of the generals who run amok after drinking too much. In "Virtue's Burden", he traps helpless peasants within the flamed battlefield as he fights the Oda army, Joan, Liu Bei and Ieyasu. Dong Zhuo stars in "Dong Zhuo's Ambition" where he seeks to create his dream paradise. Although he successfully traps several beautiful women, they are set free by Magoichi, Taigong Wang and Ryu. In "Animal Rescue", Dong Zhuo is tricked by Yuan Shao into kidnapping wolves, believing that their livers will make the ultimate love potion. In "Zhong Hui's Pride", Dong Zhuo supervises Zhong Hui to capture women, only for the Jin officer to mutiny. In "Heroes of Luoyang", Dong Zhuo is holding maidens hostage within Luoyang until Ma Chao and company ride in and free the hostages.

In the Ultimate expansion, Dong Zhuo is still stationed at Xuchang, but he is no longer affiliated with the Demon Army or Da Ji. During his tenure, he is attacked by Yuan Shao's forces, who claim that Dong had attacked them. Despite Zhong Hui's attempts to reason with the enemy army, Sima Zhao still remained hostile. In their haste, they end up defeating Shennong, who attempted to clear up to misunderstanding. After the battle, Dong Zhuo pledged his own allegiance to Shennong's cause, allowing Zhong Hui to assist the mystic. In the altered version of the stage, the Divine Mirror is able to identify both Sima Zhao and Yuan Shao as fakes, though it does not stop Dong Zhuo from still ordering attacks on Shennong upon their arrival.

In Warriors Orochi 4, Dong Zhuo is one of the warlords that were defeated and intimidated into submission by Nobunaga Oda. As part of his orders, he was sent to attack a village before being repulsed by the forces of Sun Quan. Like most of Nobunaga's allies, Dong Zhuo was stationed at Chang'an when Jia Xu invaded the city. Unlike Yuan Shao and Yoshimoto Imagawa, who surrendered to Liu Bei's Rebel Army, Dong Zhuo and Diaochan flee the city.

Dong Zhuo is not seen again until he scouts Xiaoqiao wandering around Nagashino. Hoping to add her to his harem, he begins advancing, only to meet Zhou Yu and Kojurō Katakura and get himself captured instead. Not needing more enemies, the pair reluctantly allow him to join the Coalition.

Dong Zhuo and Li Ru are manipulated by Sun Wukong's mind control tricks to attack Kunoichi and Hanzō Hattori as they patrol around. Enraged that his dreams had been delayed by this spell, he helps the ninjas chase the monkey by barring one of the shortcuts to the escape point.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

Within the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Dong Zhuo is often presented as the primary antagonistic power in earlier scenarios, the events depicting his usurpation of power from the Han court, the coalition raised to oppose him, his burning of Luoyang and eventual downfall often appearing as in-game events throughout the series. Often leading his faction initially from Tianshui in very early scenarios and often very vulnerable to the larger forces led by He Jin or the Yellow Turban Rebels, Dong Zhuo in time commands an army possessing a diverse retinue of officers and overwhelming resources from Luoyang and Chang'an prior to his death. Statistically, Dong Zhuo is presented as a very militant leader with his Leadership and War landing in the 80's while his Intelligence is competent, often falling just short of 70. Conversely, his Politics and Charisma are both very low and is compounded further by the large cast of officers who he possesses an antagonistic relation with, many whom serve him unwillingly and are likely to either rebel, scouted by other factions or leave his army altogether.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV further highlights Dong Zhuo's immoral and hedonistic actions via the character traits he is given. He possesses a unique character trait, Villainous which decreases the statistics of all nearby enemy units, offering Dong Zhuo a significant advantage in battle while his other character traits increase his units statistics while positioned over a county (Overseer) and increase the gold revenue of any area he is administrating (Tax Collector). Unfortunately, his other traits increase the troop threshold required to increase his unit's area of conquer (Notorious) and increase his stipend amount (Greedy). In reference to Dong Zhuo's time fighting on the Liang Province front, the range of formations he has access to emphasise aggression and include the swift and powerful Arrow formation, the terrain-adept Snake formation and the ranged Goose formation. His administrative policy bolsters the strength of all Scheme category policies, giving the player access to several, more powerful traps (Foil the Enemy Lv 03). His unique battle skill, Mountain and Seas inflicts damage to several enemy units while also decreasing their morale.

The thirteenth title features a what-if DLC scenario titled "The Tyrant Returns" where during the initial stages of the Battle of Guandu, Dong Zhuo re-emerges with an army from Chang'an with the intention of conquering the land. Having already subjugated and absorbed Ma Teng and Liu Zhang's factions as well as laying claim to all of Western China, Cao Cao sends a proclamation to Yuan Shao, Liu Biao, Sun Ce and Liu Bei to cease their fight against each other and leads a newly formed coalition to slay the tyrant once more.

Personality[]

Dong Zhuo is a supremely callous, egotistical and ruthless tyrant who has a penchant for labeling those who oppose him as "insects", "vermin", and "bugs" that should be squashed. He relies heavily on his most capable officers, such as Lu Bu, Hua Xiong, and Zhang Liao, and will not personally enter a battle unless he is left with little choice. Bad tempered and rude, he loves to lavish himself in luxury with fine wine, treasure, and women. The only exception to this is his relation with his granddaughter, Dong Bai, in which he refers to her as "princess", showing his more kinder side.

He's also somewhat pampered and helpless, and unwilling to fight for himself. He often dies calling out for the aid of his soldiers or Lu Bu as he did in the novel. Despite this, there are times where he can be a cleaver force to be reckoned with if he's forced to use his wits in just a few situations.

Dong Zhuo has his own plans to create his Grand Paradise once he rules the land. His dreams for the Paradise consist of Dong Zhuo being surrounded by all the beautiful women of China, as well as all the gold in the land.

His Warriors Orochi incarnation has him enjoy the cruel nature of Da Ji whilst also being a close follower to Orochi and Orochi X's power. Humorously, he is the only one that dares talks rudely to Orochi. He also berates Orochi X's wish to destroy everything, as that would mean there would be no world or paradise to enjoy. The latest installment also extends his admiration's to the Tamamo.

Character Symbolism[]

In the Japanese version of Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires, Dong Zhuo is given the nickname of "The Demonic Ruler" while the English version changes it to "The Tyrant who Brings Chaos". As a dominant ruler in Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires, he along with Cao Cao and Sima Yi call their five greatest warriors the "Five Great Generals".

In the Asian scripts, he calls his paradise "jiǔchíròulín/shuchinikurin" (酒池肉林, lit. wine ponds and meat groves), a debauchery term which is associated with promiscuity. The term came from comparisons between Kings Jie and Zhou from Xia and Shang respectively, in which they had made a luxurious garden with an artificial lake made of wine, and a forest with meat hung on its branches. Their favorite concubines, Mo Xi and Da Ji, were also held in great scrutiny due to their influence to their kings.

His Level 11 Weapon in the Asian ports shares the same name for a god of Hell in East Asian mythology and their practices of Buddhism. He would serve as a ferocious judge for a dead spirit, deciding where they would live in the afterlife. In certain legends, it is also possible for a human to eventually become a judge themselves.

The original name for his third weapon takes its namesake from beings in Hinduism, Rakshasa. They are famous for being malevolent tricksters with little to no respect for the dearly departed. Rakshasa, like people, are all different in nature and are rarely fit a single term, seeming to serve and associate with whoever pleases them. In Buddhism, they are equated to devils or ogres with zealous swordplay.

Dong Zhuo's fourth weapon as of the fourth installment is named after another godly set of beings within Hinduism and Buddhism worship, Asura. Ancient Hinduism equates them as a power hungry spirits, sometimes depicted as war mongrels in their quest for strength. Buddhism depicts them as beings who would always feel anxiety and are ready for a fight. They are considered failed incarnations for a human spirit, destined to never fully satisfy their desires.

All of Dong Zhuo's weapons take their inspiration from various forms from other evil spirits in Dynasty Warriors 6. Their names are King of Demons (Standard), Leader of Demons (Skill), and God of Demons (Strength).

His original personal item in Warriors Orochi is the Nine Bestowments, nine gifts from royalty to a vassal signaling the passing of power. Historically, Cao Cao accepted the gifts in mere gratitude and was adamant to accept them as the Duke of Wei and Sun Quan eventually became emperor after he received the gifts. Sima Zhao received the same honor while under Wei. Cao Pi and Sima Yan were not granted these gifts, but they became emperors when they ascended to power. Dong Zhuo never had the chance to receive the gifts; given his tyranny over the emperor, however, the prospect was not entirely without question and perhaps a real fear from those who witnessed his "ascension". As a side note, Xun Yu fled from Dong Zhuo's influence and was the one who later advised Cao Cao to accept the gifts.

『真・三國無双8』董卓アクション動画

Keys: Square Flow Attack • Triangle Reactive Attack • Circle Musou X Jump/Mount

Dong Zhuo is affiliated with the flail in this title. When equipped with it, Dong Zhuo can perform the following unique attacks listed below.

Unique Attacks
Unique Flow Attack Finisher: Enemy Stunned + Square Square Square Square: Dong Zhuo's finisher has him trigger a thermal explosion on the ground via flail slam. Despite its fiery appearance, this move does not actually set enemies on fire. However, it can be used to set up aerial flow attacks.
Unique Trigger Attack: R1 + Square: Rotates flail overhead repeatedly before sending it out to daze nearby foes.
Special Technique: R1 + Circle: Does a sumo stomp that causes poison sludge to radially splash around the area.
Musou Attack: Circle: Rotates flail around continuously in a counterclockwise motion. Dong Zhuo stops to strike the ground with an overhead swing before resuming his rotating attack which now has him surrounded within a circle of dusty wind. He then proceeds to end the attack by throwing his flail forward as if it was an iron shot. The momentum from Dong Zhuo's continuous spin bolsters the thrown flail's trajectory speed, enabling it to dart a considerable distance while emitting dark-colored energy. Each part of the finisher is imbued with the slash attribute.
Aerial Musou Attack: X Circle: Throws a large ball of evil spirits down on the ground, producing a fiery explosion that sends foes below airborne while burning them at the same time. Heavily based on Dong Zhuo's Black Hole Musou attack from previous installments.
Horse Maneuvers
Summon Horse: L2: Summon horse to the battlefield. Holding L2 as the horse approaches will allow the character to automatically mount them.
Auto-Run: Riding Mode + L2: Automatically runs towards a specified destination. If a destination has not been set, the horse will instead run towards the location of the player's currently selected mission.
Sprint: Riding Mode + Direction + R1: Causes horse to run at a faster pace. Doing so depletes their stamina each time.
Jump: Riding Mode + Direction + R2: Causes horse to jump high while running.
Horse Fast Attack: Riding Mode + Square: Performs a fast and seamless attack while mounted. The attack itself varies depending on what type of weapon is equipped and whether the enemy is grounded or airborne.
Horse Trigger Attack: Riding Mode + Triangle: Performs an attack that sends enemies flying into the air. May vary depending on what type of weapon is equipped.
Horse Musou Attack: Riding Mode + Circle: Causes horse to sprint by consuming Musou instead of stamina.
Dismount Horse: Riding Mode + X: Dismounts from horse and resumes default fighting stance.
Bow Maneuvers
Shooting Mode: 🡻: Pulls out bow and assumes archery stance. Can be cancelled by tapping 🡻 again.
Switch Arrows: 🡸 or 🡺: Switches between different types of arrows.
Bow Attack: Shooting Mode + Square: Fires current arrow at a target. Can lock on targets by tapping R3.
Lower Bow: Shooting Mode + X: Lowers bow while squatting down.

Dong Zhuo still uses the bomb as his default weapon in this title.

Historical Information[]

Dong Zhuo (d. May 22, 192) was a powerful warlord during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. He seized control of Luoyang in 189 after the capital fell into chaos following the death of Emperor Ling and a bloody clash between the powerful eunuch faction and the court officials.

Dong Zhuo's forces at the time, where known to be far enough away from the chaos ensuing in Luoyang, which no doubt left him in prime condition to seize the capital with ease and thus he subsequently deposed the rightful heir to the throne and instated the puppet Emperor Xian.

However, Dong Zhuo's tyrannical and cruel ways angered many, and warlords around the country formed a coalition against him, forcing him to move the capital west to Chang'an. Dong Zhuo was eventually assassinated by his adoptive son Lü Bu as part of a plot by Interior Minister, Wang Yun.

Supposedly from some records, Dong Zhuo's few redeeming traits were that he treated his soldiers well (mainly the ones still loyal to him), and that he was said to have a soft spot for his own mother.

Early Dominance[]

Dong Zhuo, the governor of Hedong, was known for his arrogance and replaced Lu Zhi as one of the Imperial Corps commanders during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. After heavy losses, Dong Zhuo was replaced by Huangfu Song and bribed the Ten Eunuchs to protect him. He rose through the ranks in the empire, eventually leading an army of two hundred thousand men.

When He Jin called for generals to visit Luoyang, Dong Zhuo left his son-in-law Niu Fu to defend his territory. He Jin welcomed Dong Zhuo wholly, frightened the Ten Eunuchs, and sent the court into confusion. Emperor Shao and his half-brother Prince Liu Xie were rescued by Min Gong. When Dong Zhuo returned to the capital, he prostrated himself before the emperor, and Emperor Shao was unable to speak at Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo secretly thought of deposing Emperor Shao and throning the prince.

Corruption in the Capital[]

"Power-hungry eunuchs, the curse of the dynasty, have thrown the masses of the people into the depths of misery. Now you, without a jot of merit, speak madly of meddling in the succession. Do you want to overthrow the dynasty yourself?"
―Ding Yuan, during a meeting.

Dong Zhuo and his troops remained outside Luoyang, but the city's inhabitants were disturbed by his disloyalty. Some ministers, including Yuan Shao and Wang Yun, discouraged action due to the court's recent stability. Dong Zhuo expressed his desire for a new emperor to Li Ru, his son-in-law and close adviser. He called for a banquet at the Garden of Benign Wisdom and defended the emperor's dignity and intellect. However, Ding Yuan, the imperial inspector of Bingzhou, questioned his power and drew his sword at him. Li Ru calmed the situation, and Lu Zhi opposed Dong Zhuo's claims.

Ding Yuan and his troops engaged in a battle outside Luoyang, but Dong Zhuo led his own forces out. Ding Yuan accused Dong Zhuo of meddling in the succession and urged Lü Bu to overthrow the dynasty. Lü Bu was later slayed and became Dong Zhuo's adoptive son. Dong Zhuo held a banquet to discuss deposing the emperor, announcing Prince Liu Xie would take over and threatened those who defied him with death. Yuan Shao, who spoke against this decision, left the assembly and was appointed governor of Bohai. In 190 AD, Dong Zhuo forced Emperor Shao and his mother to obey, leading to their beheading. Liu Xie became Emperor Xian, and Dong Zhuo became prime minister.

The former Emperor Shao and Empress He were only allotted meager meals and clothing. He grieved for it, and Dong Zhuo could then execute him for his missing of the throne. He had the former emperor and Empress He killed and buried outside of the city.

With a newfound freedom, Dong Zhuo began indulging, sleeping with the imperial concubines and sleeping in the emperor's bed. The next month from the former emperor's deposing, Dong Zhuo had his troops come to a small village outside of Luoyang. The inhabitants were worshiping their local god in honor of the spring. Dong Zhuo ordered all of the men beheaded with their heads, numbering more than one thousand tied to some carts, and all of the goods and women seized and distributed amongst the troops. He came back into the capital, claiming he has quelled some bandits.

Failed Assassinations[]

"You are not my sovereign. I am not your subject. What 'treason' are you talking about? Your crimes tower to Heaven, and the whole world longs to see you dead. My one regret is that I cannot have you pulled apart by horses ― like any traitor ― to satisfy the realm."
―Wu Fu

At one point in time, the commandant of the Exemplary Cavalry, Wu Fu, attempted to assassinate Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo was able to seize Wu Fu, and questioned why he would commit treason. Before his execution, Wu Fu shouted, "You are not my sovereign. I am not your subject. What 'treason' are you talking about? Your crimes tower to Heaven, and the whole world longs to see you dead. My one regret is that I cannot have you pulled apart by horses ― like any traitor ― to satisfy the realm."

Cao Cao, whom was trusted by Dong Zhuo, also tried an attempt at assassination. Behind his back, Cao Cao drew a special dagger out, but Dong Zhuo quickly saw into a metal reflector showing the weapon and turned around, questioning what Cao Cao was doing. Now that Lü Bu was in the room, Cao Cao shook to his knees and presented the knife in a present-like fashion. Dong Zhuo accepted the gift, but later put a bounty on the fleeing Cao Cao after discovering the dagger's true purpose (the fact that the dagger was not sheathed but exposed raised Dong's doubts).

The Alliance against Dong Zhuo[]

Cao Cao formed an alliance against Dong Zhuo, leading to a clash at Si River. Dong Zhuo killed Hua Xiong and executed Yuan Wei, the Imperial Guardian and Yuan Shao's uncle. He led 100,000 to Hulao Pass and Lü Bu. Dong Zhuo failed to form an alliance with Sun Jian and transferred the capital to Chang'an. He stripped five ministers, executed many in Luoyang, and ordered Lü Bu to plunder the emperors' tombs.

Wedging Bonds and Betrayal[]

Dong Zhuo focused on fortifying Chang'an, and rectified every member of his house, young and old, into having titles. His family lived amongst wealth, and he had many feasts.

During a banquet, with all nobles present, several hundred enemy troops were brought in after voluntarily surrendering. Dong Zhuo had all of them mutilated by the guards, some with limbs lopped off, tongues cut, eyes gouged out, or even boiled in vats. Though the officials could not hold their chopsticks at the horrors, Dong Zhuo kept chatting and drinking, laughing, and unperturbed.

On another day, Dong Zhuo had Lü Bu bring out the minister of public works, Zhang Wen beheaded with the head on a red platter, accusing him of conspiracy with Yuan Shu.

Wang Yun once invited Dong Zhuo to a dinner, where he presented Diaochan, his foster daughter, into dancing and serving Dong Zhuo. He was mystified by the sixteen-year old Diaochan, marveling at her voice and looks. Wang Yun had Diaochan become a concubine of Dong Zhuo, and soon became his favorite.

Over time, tension grew between Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu, who had also been promised Diaochan in marriage, to which was unbeknownst to Dong Zhuo. On one occasion, Dong Zhuo even chased his adoptive son around the Phoenix Pavilion wielding a halberd after seeing him holding Diaochan. Diaochan falsely said Lü Bu was courting her unjustly.

Li Su was sent to Dong Zhuo to send an untrue message that the emperor wanted to abdicate all power to him. Dong Zhuo marveled at the thought, and went to take leave of his ninety-year old mother. His mother complained of suffering from uneasiness and pains in her heart, describing it as an ill omen. Dong Zhuo dismissed them respectfully as signs that she would become the mother empress.

On his way for Chang'an, a wheel on Dong Zhuo's carriage broke, and he switched to riding a horse. Soon, the horse snorted wildly and its reins broke. The next day, a fierce storm broke out. Li Su dismissed these events as more signs of Dong Zhuo's soon-to-be greatness.

Upon entering the palace court, Dong Zhuo saw a Taoist priest wearing a white headdress and dark gown, and holding a long staff, each with the character "mouth" written on both sides. Dong Zhuo recognized that the character for Lü also had two overlaying squares, but Li Su chased the priest away. As he went into the main court, he saw a group of sword-armed men with Wang Yun at its center. Dong Zhuo asked what was the meaning of the swords, to which Wang Yun shouted that the traitor was here, and the swords were launched at Dong Zhuo. However, his armor protected him from everything but a wounded arm and a falling off the carriage, so he shouted, "Where is my son?"

Lü Bu appeared from behind the carriage and responded, "Here is the edict to punish the traitor!" Dong Zhuo's neck was lanced by his son. Dong Zhuo's clan were later slaughtered by Lü Bu.
