Fei Yao (onyomi: Hi Yō) is one of Cao Zhen's vassals who assisted his lord in suppressing the third Northern Campaign lead by Zhuge Liang.
Role in Games[]
Fei Yao first appears in Dynasty Warriors in the fifth title during Zhuge Liang's northern campaigns, where he is most prominently featured at Chen Cang. He returns only in Dynasty Warriors 8 and arrives as part of reinforcements at both Jieting and Chencang in Shu's story. He also fights the Shu army in their hypothetical route at Luoyang and Xuchang. Fei Yao is an above-average officer in Romance of the Three Kingdoms with stats in the 70's and 60's. He is most experienced with cavalry units and can be found in Wei's ranks in the later scenarios.

Historical Information[]
Fei Yao served as Wei as the General of the Rear. In 220, he accompanied Zhang Ji and Xiahou Ru in suppressing the rebellion of Zhang Jin in Jiuquan in Liang Province. He continued to serve at the borders of Wei to Shu and was dispatched in 229 to aid Hao Zhao in the defense of Chencang. In 231, Sima Yi led an attack on Shu and Fei Yao followed him. He fought the Shu forces alongside Guo Huai and Dai Ling, but they were defeated and withdrew. There is no further mention of him in history.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]
In chapter 97 of the novel, the Wei Regent-Marshal Cao Zhen was sent by the emperor to reinforce Chencang, which was being held down by Hao Zhao, from being conquered by Zhuge Liang. Jiang Wei, a recent defector from Wei to Shu, sent a letter to Cao Zhen proposing that he lead a large force to meet the Shu forces, feign defeat and flee, luring the enemy to follow them, and when a signal fire behind the enemy army is lit, turn around and catch the Shu command in a pincer attack.
Cao Zhen called Fei Yao to discuss the matter, and he declared that Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei were tricksters, and shouldn't be trusted. Because of Cao Zhen's refusals to accept those facts, Fei Yao volunteered to take Cao Zhen's place, to which was agreed to. Following through with his volunteer, Fei Yao feigned defeat and fled thrice before being ambushed in succession by Jiang Wei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Xing, Ma Dai, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Yi. Fei Yao was eventually cornered and slit his throat.
Upon hearing of Fei Yao's death, Cao Zhen became full of regret.
