Xu Rong (onyomi: Jo Ei) is an officer who served Dong Zhuo. He was sent by his master to defend Liang Dong and he led a surprise attack against Sun Jian and forced the latter to flee. The soldiers under Xu Rong chased after Zu Mao, and allowing Sun Jian to escape. Aside from Sun Jian, Xu Rong also held successive victories over Cao Cao, nearly killing him in one occasion.

Role in Games

Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed has Xu Rong set up trebuchets and traps to slow down the Alliance's march to Hulao Gate. His defeat is necessary to stop the contraptions from attacking the player.

Within Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xu Rong appears as a member of Dong Zhuo's army in scenarios set after the Yellow Turban Rebellion and is otherwise found as a free officer around Beiping in the northeast. With respectable stats in both leadership and war which land around the 80's as well as his access to positive traits and a diverse selection of formations to use, Xu Rong ranks among the best of Dong Zhuo's military officers. In reference to Xu Rong's recommendation of Gongsun Du to take the role of Administrator of Liaodong, him and Xu Rong get along with each other and perform better in battle when deployed together.

Historical Information

Xu Rong was born in Xiangping County (襄平縣), Liaodong Commandery, with another account claiming instead that he was from Xuantu Commandery. He has been serving Dong Zhuo and held the position as a General of the Household. During this time, he recommended Gongsun Du, who was from the same commandery as him, to serve as the Administrator of Liaodong Commandery.

During the battle against the coalition, he can triumph over Cao Cao, Zhang Miao, Sun Jian and Yuan Shu. During the battle, he captured and killed the coalition's warlord who named Li Min (李旻).

When Dong Zhuo was assassinated, he switched allegiance to the new central government led by Wang Yun. He lead the troop to battle against Li Jue and Guo Si follow Wang Yun's order but he was killed in the battle.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Xu Rong makes an appearance as a minor character in the novel with him being given a role to ambush Cao Cao's army following the advice of Li Ru. He was successful in his ambush, wiping out most of Cao Cao's forces and almost killing Cao Cao himself, but was prevented by Cao Hong, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan. He was shortly afterwards slain by Xiahou Dun in a duel.
