Hua Xiong (onyomi: Ka Yū) is one of Dong Zhuo's officers. Romance of the Three Kingdoms portrays him as a powerful warrior whose presence alone was enough to stall the Allied Forces at Sishui Gate.
Before his playable debut, he had been a generic officer since the second title. He is the winning vote for the Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires Warrior edit character. He also placed eighteenth with fans in Gamecity's Shin Sangoku Musou Blast first card promotion poll.
Role in Games[]
Dynasty Warriors[]
Hua Xiong is an important character in the early stages of many Dynasty Warriors games. He appears at Si Shui Gate in many installments, and in certain conditions, can appear at Hu Lao Gate. In the series' earlier installments, he may be instantly routed by Guan Yu in a special cutscene.
In Dynasty Warriors 4, Si Shui Gate is an optional battle in many Musou Modes. If played, Hua Xiong appears as an officer under Dong Zhuo's forces. If Hua Xiong is slain, Yuan Shao, leader of the Allied Forces, praises the warrior that killed him. However, if you choose to skip Si Shui Gate, Hua Xiong appears at Hu Lao Gate. After encountering Dong Zhuo's main camp, Hua Xiong ambushes the Allied main camp, attacking Yuan Shao.
Hua Xiong returns in Dynasty Warriors 5 serving Dong Zhuo in most of his battles up to Si Shui Gate. However, due to not longer appearing at Hulao, his role is expanded in the battle and he will lead Dong Zhuo's forces in the battle before his death. In Pang De's Musou Mode, he asks the warrior to join Dong Zhuo's forces, only to be rejected.
Like in the main titles, Dynasty Warriors Next has Hua Xiong wreak havoc on the coalition at Sishui Gate. A panicking Yuan Shao orders his men to eliminate him, though he escapes after losing a duel against Cao Cao. He later returns to stage a surprise attack on the main camp, but is thwarted upon facing Guan Yu.
In a Dynasty Warriors 8 DLC stage, he serves as commander for the forces of Dong Zhuo stationed at Ruxukou. If he falls, the battle is lost.
In Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, his death at Hulao Gate can be averted by the player's actions. Doing so will cause Hua Xiong to swear his loyalty towards Lu Bu after their escape from Luoyang, making him the key character needed to unlock Lu Bu's hypothetical story branch. Alternatively, he will fall at Dingtao instead if the historical path is still followed.
In the hypothetical route, Hua Xiong accompanies Lu Bu's forces to Xu Province, Wujun, and Guandu before finally being present during the recapturing of Chang'an.
Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed has Hua Xiong serve as the player's first boss battle. Reducing his morale is essential in order to damage him and enable Guan Yu to land the finishing blow.
As a unique NPC in Dynasty Warriors 9, he is one of Dong Zhuo's generals who is present as early as his lord's conquest of Liang Province. During the conflict at Luoyang, Hua Xiong boasts that he can handle the Coalition army himself and, like previous installments, he guards Sishui Gate. His defeat is required for the coalition to advance to Hulao Gate to face Lu Bu, Zhang Liao, and Diaochan, before they can begin the full-scale assault on Luoyang to oust Dong Zhuo from power.
Hua Xiong, a character in the Chinese novel, initially fights against Zhang Lu's forces during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. He saves Dong Bai, who takes him under Dong Zhuo's wing. Hua Xiong suppresses rebellions and is called to Luoyang, where Dong Zhuo seized power. He defeats Ding Yuan and Lu Bu. Hua Xiong tries to impress Lu Bu, but fails. He defends Sishui Gate, pursues Cao Cao, and defeats Sun Jian at the historical battle of Yangren. Lu Bu is impressed, but Hua Xiong forces Lu Bu to recognize his strength. In his end, he meets Dong Bai and his men, who scolds him for drinking wine before battle. Hua Xiong charges Guan Yu upon seeing him at his next fight, but Hua Xiong is slain by the God of War.
In the Shu, Wu, and Wei Story Modes in Chapter Two, Hua Xiong defends Sishui Gate, assisted in his endeavor by Zhang Ji, Xu Rong, Zhang Xiu, and Cheng Lian. When he makes it clear no one is getting through the gate, he orders his troops to prevent the Coalition battering rams from reaching the gate and smashing it open, and when they get too close, orders Xu Rong to open fire with the archer detail. When Zhang Xiu and Cheng Lian are eliminated defending the gate, Zhang Ji moves to defend the gate himself, but upon being defeated as well, Hua Xiong ops to open the gate anyway and face the Coalition forces himself. Xu Rong's defeat cuts off the archer detail from assisting Hua Xiong any further, and Hua Xiong soon meets his end as well, with his final words being in shock at the Coalition being tougher than he expected and he never thought he could be beaten before drawing his last breath.
Warriors Orochi[]
In Warriors Orochi, he appears as one of the valorous generals of Dong Zhuo at Tong Gate. Defeating Hua Xiong will raise morale of the Oda forces. He also appears frozen at Ji Province, getting Goemon Ishikawa to free the frontlines of the sorcery allows Hua Xiong to move again. One of the original dream stages in Musou OROCHI Z has Hua Xiong be summoned by the mystics to fend off Nene's ninja army. This only occurs if Lu Bu is already a member of the player's attack team.
In Warriors Orochi 3, he (along with Yan Liang, Xiahou He, and Tsuneoki Ikeda) is one of several officers magically converted to the enemy's side by Kiyomori Taira and Sun Wukong at the Battle of Anegawa unless the player acts fast and beats Sun Wukong. He also appears in the stage Diversion at Mt. Xingshi as reinforcements for the Demon Army.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Hua Xiong represents the pinnacle of Dong Zhuo's original retinue, possessing high military stats with War generally within the 90's while his domestic stats are middling at best. He is present usually as a member of Dong Zhuo's army after the Yellow Turban Rebellion, but can be found as a free officer during the rebellion.
Within the fourteenth instalment, Hua Xiong's traits further emphasise his penchant for violence and duels by increasing the Assault stat of any unit he leads (Annihilator), increase the likelihood of duels occurring (Duelist) and the the likelihood enemy officers he battles are wounded or killed in action (Warrior). Conversely, Hua Xiong is unable to ignore engagement with approaching enemy units (Reckless) and is easily provoked by enemy plots (Irritable). The formations he command also emphasise offensive output with Fish being useful for balanced offense and defense, Arrow for swift, aggressive attacks while Awl is useful for swiftly reaching locations and encircling enemy units. Hua Xiong also possesses the unique battle tactic, Unstoppable Strike which will inflict high damage to an enemy unit and decrease it's defense for a period of 10 days. Hua Xiong as a whole represents a very fierce, aggression-oriented officer within the game.
Character Information[]
Development[]
Suzuki remarked that Hua Xiong's playable Dynasty Warriors design was to made to the theme of "something dangerous has appeared!" The thicker armor around his limbs was done to give him an impressionable faraway running silhouette. His darkened eyes and lips are meant to give him an evil aura.
Personality[]
His playable counterpart shares a rivalry with Lu Bu, wherein upon the former's entrance onto Dong Zhuo's service, Hua Xiong prides himself for possessing the mantle of the mightiest warrior within Dong Zhuo's army. He further expresses his desire to one day settle the matter of which of the two is stronger on the field of battle. He is also very simple-minded, he only thinks of battle and couldn't understand Diaochan's attempted flirts with him, and even Lu Bu finds him truly inscrutable. Dong Bai is surprisingly fond of his simple nature and the two share an odd camarederie with one another.

Hua Xiong is affiliated with the club in this title. When equipped with it, Hua Xiong can perform the following unique attacks listed below.
- Unique Attacks
- Unique Flow Attack Finisher: Enemy Stunned + : Latches unto an enemy and tosses them up in the air before batting their whole body away. Can also knock aside nearby foes in the process.
- Unique Trigger Attack: R1 + : Charges forth and kicks an enemy away before striking them down with a swing to the lower right.
- Special Technique: R1 + : Grabs a nearby foe and headbutts them hard while generating a poisonous radial shockwave. Hua Xiong then releases his dazed victim in time to hit them with a leftward swing laced with more poison.
- Musou Attack: : Unleashes a series of club slams while moving steadily. Hua Xiong immediately grabs the closest foe with his free hand, poisoning their body before chokeslamming them on the ground. He then proceeds to stomp on them twice and follows it up with a powerful smash attack that causes tremors to erupt in its wake. If Hua Xiong fails to latch unto an enemy, he will instead stomp the ground with his right foot to unleash a radial shockwave imbued with the poison element.
- Aerial Musou Attack: : Lands a potent overhead smash, causing the earth to tremble violently while sending nearby foes airborne. Also inflicts slash-based damage.
- Horse Maneuvers
- Summon Horse: L2: Summon horse to the battlefield. Holding L2 as the horse approaches will allow the character to automatically mount them.
- Auto-Run: Riding Mode + L2: Automatically runs towards a specified destination. If a destination has not been set, the horse will instead run towards the location of the player's currently selected mission.

Historical Information[]
According to Chen Shou, Hua Xiong was a military commander who served under Dong Zhuo. Pan Mei, a historian from the Qing Dynasty, wrote that he was a chief commander and argued that his name was She Xiong. He reasoned that it was likely a mistake on transcribing the character used for his family name, though it is debatable if She is his actual family name.
In the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Hua Xiong only appears in Sun Jian's scroll. He was a subordinate under Hu Zhen and Lu Bu, as they worked together to defeat Sun Jian. However, Hu Zhen and Lu Bu did not get along with one another and Lu Bu decided to spread false rumors about the attack. Hu Zhen couldn't command his confused troops and suffered a heavy loss against Sun Jian. Hua Xiong died fighting during the battle at Yangren, and his head was claimed by Sun Jian.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Hua Xiong, a 210 cm tall warrior from Quanzhong, is appointed as Colonel of Resolute Cavalry by Dong Zhuo. He is supported by Li Su, Hu Zhen, and Zhao Cen. Despite losing Hu Zhen to Sun Jian's army, he manages to drive them back and defeat Sun Jian's officer, Zu Mao. He also defeats Yu She, officer of Yuan Shu, and Pan Feng, officer of Han Fu. Guan Yu then volunteers to attack Hua Xiong, and despite Yuan Shu's objections, Yuan Shao allows him to try. A cup of heated wine was poured out for him, and Guan Yu soon returned with Hua Xiong's head before the wine had cooled.
