Also known as Hu Juer, an alternative reading. "Hu" (胡) is an archaic recognition for a foreigner in China, but there are no records which support or state Huche'er's foreign origins. In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, Huche'er and Hu Juar are two separate individuals that are condensed into one in Koei adaptations. His year of death is fictional. |
Huche'er (onyomi: Ko Shaji) is a general who served under Zhang Xiu, historically said to have been one of the greatest in his army. When his lord surrendered to Cao Cao, it was said that Cao Cao personally sought for Huche'er and paid gold for the general's new services to him. This apparently caused Zhang Xiu to fear his former general would be used in an assassination attempt on his life, thus relapsing their negative relations and causing the night raid at Wan Castle. Huche'er has no other mentions in historical records.
Role in Games[]
Within Koei titles, Huche'er is used as a condensation of the figures Hu Juer and Huche'er that appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. Huche'er usually partakes in Dong Zhuo's ambushes within the Dynasty Warriors series by leading his own unique squad. Otherwise, he is usually defending the main camp. He appears at Wan Castle to ambush Cao Cao or fight Dian Wei.
Whenever the player uses Dong Zhuo in a stage he partakes in, Huche'er will always act as his NPC replacement in Warriors Orochi 3.
In Dynasty Warriors 7 and 8, he is one of the few NPC generals with a unique design.
Like other Koei titles, Huche'er is often associated with Dong Zhuo in Romance of the Three Kingdoms series as an homage to the myth surrounding his western foreign origins and Dong Zhuo's subjugation of foreigners in the west; both ideas are derived from his name. After Dong Zhuo's assassination, he will normally serve Zhang Ji and then Zhang Xiu after him, often being the strongest officer in Zhang Xiu's army. Huche'er is an above average officer with a decent War stat throughout the series, while his other stats are abysmal or minimal in recent titles. Earlier entries of the series have him showing some aptitude for surprise attacks, while in later entries he is a front line fighter.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]
Romance of the Three Kingdoms establishes Huchi'er and Hu Che'er as two separate individuals, whereas they are condensed into a single character in Koei adaptations.
Huchi'er[]
Huchi'er appears only in chapter 8 of the novel, being the closest advisor of Niu Fu. Following Dong Zhuo's assassination at the hands of Lu Bu and the latter's clash with Dong Zhuo's subordinates, Huchi'er advises Niu Fu that they have no chance of defeating Lu Bu and instead recommends that they gather as much wealth as they can and desert the army in the night to submit to Lu Bu. However Huchi'er is later overcome by greed and kills Niu Fu, then brings his head to Lu Bu who ultimately has Huchi'er put to death for his treachery.
Hu Che'er[]
Hu Che'er appears only in chapter 16 of the novel, which emphasizes his strength as a man who could lift five hundred jin and ride seven hundred li in a day. Before Zhang Xiu sought to assassinate Cao Cao at Wancheng, he considered Dian Wei to be a viable threat to his plans and hesitated. Hu Che'er volunteered and successfully stole Dian Wei's twin halberds, which ultimately led to Dian Wei's demise. He is not mentioned in the novel again.
