Man Chong (onyomi: Man Chō) is an officer and politician of Wei. Known as a courageous and prudent person who stood eight chi tall (roughly 190 cm or 6'3"), he assisted Cao Ren at Fan Castle and strengthened Hefei Castle's defenses. Romance of the Three Kingdoms accredits him for convincing Xu Huang to serve Cao Cao.

Before his playable Dynasty Warriors appearance, he was a generic NPC since its third installment. He placed twentieth with fans in Gamecity's Shin Sangoku Musou Blast first card promotion poll and placed first in the second card promotion poll.

Role in Games[]

Dynasty Warriors[]

In Dynasty Warriors 6, he helps Cao Ren defend Fan Castle from the likes of Guan Yu. He also appears in an exclusive cutscene during the battle of Hefei Castle, in which he says that the castle is unable to fall, meaning that he took part in planning the castle's defenses.

His role at Hefei Castle in Dynasty Warriors 8 is reduced to ambushing Wu's main camp when Sun Quan starts his advance though the narration mentions that it was Man Chong who built the new castle. In Wei's hypothetical route, he participates in the campaign against Wu at Jianye and in the campaign against the alliance formed by Liu Bei and several other warlords that oppose Cao Cao.

In Xtreme Legends, Man Chong is the commander of Hefei Castle in Jin's storyline; the player must rescue him from Sun Quan's men.

Man Chong is recurring enemy officer for Shu's scenario campaigns in Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed. He will attempt to block Liu Bei's escape from Xuzhou with fire archers and aid Li Dian in covering for Cao Cao when things in Chibi go badly for the Wei forces.

His playable incarnation at Dynasty Warriors 9 has him appear as one of Xun Yu's recruits for the battle against Tao Qian.

Their success in the campaign is cut short when Lu Bu appears and stakes his claim over Yan Province. After defeating Lu Bu, Man Chong helps his lord secure the emperor. During which, he meets his old friend, Xu Huang, and implores him to switch sides. Once the emperor is taken to Xuchang, Cao Cao accepts the surrender of Zhang Xiu, but Man Chong suspects something ominous due to Wan Castle's intricate design. His anxieties are proven when Cao Ang and Cao Anmin's units request for reinforcements.

After securing the north, Man Chong participates in the campaigns against Sun Quan at Chibi and Ruxukou. After Hanzhong is lost, Man Chong is sent to aid Cao Ren, Pang De, and Yu Jin in organizing Fan Castle's defense. Their preparations are for naught as the flood attack leads to Yu Jin's surrender and Pang De's capture.

Making use of Wu's betrayal, Guan Yu is slain, and Cao Cao falls to natural causes shortly after. Serving Cao Pi, Man Chong aids the prince's ascent to the throne when he attempts to find the root cause of the false rumors in Xuchang.

After Han is replaced with Wei, the strategist accompanies his lord in his attempts to conquer both Wu and Shu. After Cao Xiu's defeat at Shiting, Man Chong and Sima Yi are sent to rescue the young general and to avenge his previous defeat. While they are victorious, Cao Pi dies to illness before they can celebrate.

After Cao Pi's death, Man Chong is sent to Hefei to prepare a new castle to fight Wu. Together with reinforcements from Zhuge Dan and Xin Xianying, Man Chong is able to defeat Sun Quan's massive army at Hefei Castle.

He later invites Sima Yi and various officers to tour a new trap of the castle, Man Chong intentionally traps all of them in a room. Playfully, he asks Sima Yi to find whatever holes he can find in the design.

During Guo Jia's DLC scenario, Man Chong is tasked with defending Hefei from Sun Quan's follow-up attack after Chibi and successfully defends the city in time for them to rescue Cao Ren at Nanjun.

He and the other Wei strategists later pull together and successfully defeat Liu Bei and unite the land with Guo Jia before his illness can claim him. He and the others later hold a banquet in their friend's name before he quietly passes away without their knowledge.

Warriors Orochi[]

In Warriors Orochi 2, Man Chong appears among Cao Cao's forces at Yi Ling. He is charged with setting fire to the cannons of Orochi's forces. If he is not defeated before his retreat, he will later return as part of Cao Cao's ambush party.

In Warriors Orochi 3, Man Chong serves as Xu Huang's replacement officer when the player includes the latter in their attack team.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

Romance of the Three Kingdoms has Man Chong appear as an officer of Cao Cao's faction shortly after Dong Zhuo's death and serving within Wei as far as Gongsun Yuan's Rebellion. Portrayed as a well-rounded officer overall, Man Chong's stats save for War all land in the low-to-mid 80's while said War falls in the 60's. Man Chong generally possesses many traits that expedite the repair and construction of Castle Walls and Traps while also increasing the damage cities inflict upon enemy officers rendering Man Chong a very adept defensive general. His role in convincing Xu Huang to defect to Cao Cao's forces as well as his own recruitment by Cao Cao alongside Lu Qian via Liu Ye's recommendation are portrayed as in-game events.

Character Information[]

Development[]

His Blast design is meant to embody someone who is always absorbed in his strategies and pays little attention to his appearance. Suzuki admits his main series Dynasty Warriors design was based on his Blast design. His rich-looking attire is a homage to his family upbringing, but his untied top is meant to reflect his indifference to anything outside of work. Man Chong was adapted to be the tallest of the strategists in the series due to his historical height.

Personality[]

Man Chong in his playable portrayal, is often shown to be a bit of an in-doors worker who prefers intricacies and has a notable fascination for traps of all kinds. However, he shows indifference to things outside of his work, most notably even in his attire (as both his battle outfit and civilian clothing are poorly done).

Historical Information[]

Man Chong was born in Shanyang, Yan Province. Man Chong was appointed county inspector at the age of eighteen, but he abandoned his post after arresting and lynching a county inspector suspected of corruption in prison. After Cao Cao took control of Yan Province, he reappointed Man Chong and later made him the magistrate of capital Xu.

At the time, Cao Hong's retainers had repeatedly broken the law, and Man Chong had them arrested. Cao Hong pleaded with Man Chong for mercy, but his request was rejected. So Cao Hong appealed directly to Cao Cao. Upon learning that Cao Cao had summoned him, Man Chong immediately executed the prisoners to prevent Cao Cao from pardoning them. Cao Cao was reportedly delighted, saying, "Isn't this what officials are supposed to do?"

After Yuan Shu proclaimed himself emperor, Cao Cao arrested his relative, Yang Biao, and had Man Chong try him for treason. Xun Yu and Kong Rong, citing Yang Biao's noble status, urged Man Chong to only take his confession and refrain from torture (according to Confucian precepts, "a scholar-official should not be tortured, nor should commoners be treated with courtesy"). Man Chong ignored them and tortured Yang Biao according to the law. He then reported to Cao Cao, "After torturing Yang Biao, no evidence has been obtained. To execute a person, one must first publicize his crimes. This man is world-famous. Executing him without evidence would greatly undermine public support. I privately feel sorry for you, my Lord." Cao Cao then released Yang Biao that same day. Xun Yu and Kong Rong were initially indignant at Man Chong's actions, but upon learning that he had facilitated Yang Biao's release, they began to commend him.

Before the Battle of Guandu, Cao Cao, considering Runan as the origin of the Yuan clan and the numerous private strongholds of Yuan's retainers, appointed Man Chong as the prefect of Runan to suppress the rebellion. Man Chong recruited 500 soldiers, captured 20 strongholds, lured 10 leaders to come for a feigned peace negotiation, and then executed them at the banquet, thus suppressing Runan.

He later joined the battle of Fan Castle where he convinced Cao Ren not to retreat due to the flood being a temporary setback. Furthermore, he pointed out several strategic blunders made by Guan Yu which helped them defend the castle until reinforcements arrived.

Man Chong also participated in the resumed conflict against Wu. Though he and his allies were unable to secure Wu's territories, they did, however, manage to repel Sun Quan who attacked Hefei once more during 233. His contributions throughout the campaign include suggesting the construction of a new castle to help repel Wu's navy, ambushing Sun Quan's troops, and destroying the enemy army's siege rams.

In 225, Man Chong participated in a Cao Pi's southern expedition. Noticing the prevailing wind direction, he concluded that the enemy would resort to fire attacks. The Wei army was able to ambush and defeat the Wu army's attempted fire attack.

In 228, Wu General Zhou Fang feigned surrender to lure Cao Xiu into launching a campaign against Wu, and Man Chong was dispatched to assist. Man Chong submitted a memorial to Cao Rui accusing Cao Xiu of reckless advances, but Cao Xiu was defeated before the memorial could reach the emperor. Cao Xiu died of illness that year, and Cao Rui appointed Man Chong acting military commander of Yang Province. Soldiers and civilians in Runan attempted to prevent Man Chong from leaving. The military protector demanded the execution of the instigators, but Cao Rui instructed Man Chong to select a thousand of the petitioners as his personal guards to quell the situation.

In 231, Wu general Sun Bu feigned surrender, claiming he was too far away and needed Wei troops to support him. Yang Province Governor Wang Ling planned to send troops to meet him, but Man Chong, believing it was a feint, instructed his officials to refuse to provide Wang Ling with soldiers. Wang Ling dispatched a deputy commander with 700 men to meet Sun Bu, but they were ambushed and severely defeated. Wang Ling resented Man Chong for this, and his subordinates accused Man Chong of being old and incompetent to Cao Rui. Folk Rumors of the Wei and Jin Dynasties claimed that after Cao Rui recalled Man Chong, he let Man Chong drink a whole dan of wine without getting drunk. This made Cao Rui convinced that the accusations against Man Chong were false and he reappointed Man Chong to the front line.

In 233, Man Chong submitted a memorial arguing that the current city of Hefei, located near a river, was easily attacked but difficult to defend. He suggested abandoning some of the territory and building a new city in a strategic location to lure the Wu army ashore to engage in combat, where they were less skilled. Cao Rui initially opposed the proposal, but after a second memorial, he accepted it. After the new city was completed, the Wu army attacked again, but due to its distance from the water, they hesitated for twenty days and did not disembark. Man Chong believed that Sun Quan would definitely come ashore to show off his military power, so he set up an ambush and defeated the Wu soldiers who came ashore later.

In 234, Sun Quan and Zhuge Liang jointly launched an attack on Wei. Man Chong dispatched troops upwind to set fire to the Wu siege equipment and sniped Sun Quan's nephew, Sun Tai. The Wu army was forced to retreat.

Man Chong eventually became Grand Marshal and died during Cao Fang's reign. His posthumous title was Marquis Jing (Marquis of Benevolence and Righteousness).

Man Chong's son Man Wei became the Superintendent of the Guards, but Man Wei's son Man Changwu refused to let Sima Zhao's brother Sima Gan go to suppress the emperor during Sima Zhao's regicide incident, resulting in Man Changwu being lynched in prison by Sima Zhao, and Man Wei being demoted to a commoner.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

He first appeared when Cao Cao announced to recruit skilled people in Yan Province and was invited by Cao Cao and Liu Ye. While Cao Cao was taking emperor to Xu Chang, was hindered by Xu Huang who is the general of Yang Feng. Man Chong then asks Cao Cao to persuade Xu Huang to become a group and which he success. Later, he played a role in scouting the battles of Yuan Shao against Gongsun Zan and helping Cao Rui to subdue Lu Xun's army at Hefei.
