First Appearance: Hyrule Warriors Legends

Phantom Ganon (ファントムガノン, Fantomu Ganon) is a recurring boss in Hyrule Warriors Legends. He is an enemy that made his first appearance in Ocarina of Time, and has played a major role in nearly every Zelda game in which Ganondorf makes an appearance. The Hyrule Warriors incarnation is taken from The Wind Waker.

Role in Game[]

Phantom Ganon appears as the main villain of the Wind Waker segment of Legend Mode. It's revealed that, in attempt to increase his power, Phantom Ganon stole the Triforce of Power from Lana and sealed Cia's spirit within the Temple of Souls, then created a shadowy clone of her named Dark Cia to steal her magic. Using the Triforce of Power he tore open another rift in time and space, this time to the Great Sea, and Link was sent to investigate. He was soon joined by Tetra, Lana, King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, and even a revived and redeemed Cia. Together this group destroyed Dark Cia, then traveled to Phantom Ganon's lair in a merged version of the Wind and Earth Temples to confront him.

In the ensuing battle, the group combined their strengths to weaken the Evil Spirit from Beyond, and destroyed him. With his destruction, the rift closed, Cia regained her magic, and both her and Lana regained the Triforce of Power, now shared between them. Notably, it's never clear what exactly Phantom Ganon intended to do with his stolen resources, if anything.

Gameplay[]

Boss Abilities[]

Phase 1:

  • Phantom Ganon charges up a blue ball of energy and flings it at his target. The player can attack the energy ball to knock it back at Phantom Ganon, who will deflect the ball back towards the player. If the player repeats this process long enough, Phantom Ganon will eventually fail to deflect his own projectile, which causes him to expose his Weak Point Gauge.
  • Phantom Ganon charges up 5 black orbs of energy and launches them at his target. The player can deflect all 5 energy balls back at Phantom Ganon by attacking them. The deflected orbs will strike Phantom Ganon and cause him to expose his Weak Point Gauge. The number of orbs that are successfully deflected does not matter; as long as at least 1 orb from this attack successfully hits Phantom Ganon, he will expose his Weak Point Gauge.
  • Phantom Ganon vanishes. After a few seconds, he appears near an enemy and attacks them with a quick sword slash.

Phase 2:

  • Phantom Ganon winds up, then begins to violently spin around with both of his swords outstretched, creating a large amount of red lightning within the attack itself. Phantom Ganon moves around slowly while performing this attack. After finishing this attack, Phantom Ganon will begin to laugh for a few seconds, which leaves him open to an attack from behind.
  • Phantom Ganon raises both of his swords, then performs a pair of diagonal slashes with both, creating an X-shaped slash.

Counter Strategies[]

Like The Imprisoned and the Great Fairy, Phantom Ganon has no Item based weakness. For the first phase of his fight, the player must bounce back his energy projectiles by attacking them to reveal his Weak Point Gauge. Alternatively, the player can exploit Phantom Ganon's second weakness to expose his Weak Point Gauge: attacking his back. By attacking Phantom Ganon enough from behind, he will stagger and expose his Weak Point Gauge. Due to the randomness of his attack patterns, fighting Phantom Ganon can sometimes drag on longer than players would like, especially when fighting him in Adventure Mode. After Phantom Ganon's health is reduced to a certain point, he summons a second sword and begins his second phase. During this phase, Phantom Ganon focuses more on performing wide-ranged attacks with his swords, including a powerful, long-lasting spin attack. He will stop flinging projectiles as well, but he will not teleport as often and will sometimes begin to seemingly laugh after attacking, which leaves him open to an attack from behind.
